This is the Profiles Index

This page contains information on some of the key people working on Project Romania.

Alexandru Bratfalean

Alexandru is an accomplished farmer from the Mila, a village area, in Bistri.
He hopes one day his son will graduate and take over his business.

André Jaques Bubear

During a 1990 horse ride through Romania André first seriously thought
about working for ILPH. Sixteen years later, André is going back to Romania as the ILPH Team Leader and Master Saddler for a five year one million pound project aimed at improving the welfare of the Romanian working horses.

Calin Melu Maierean

A nice house, with modern furniture and cable TV, a well equipped kitchen - Calin and his wife, call this their 'dream'. The house is not their own, it is the a residence Calin is granted as the appointed official vet. Outside lies the village of Mila, where most of the work is still done with horses, meaning lots of headaches for newly graduated Calin.

Ian Kelly

Ian Kelly was the Superintendent at the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace; the prestige of this appointment is starkly contrasted by his role as the Head of International Training, establishing equine welfare projects in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Jo White

Jo has dedicated her working life to horses. She has worked with drive and passion over the last four and a half years as the Head of Campaigns and European Affairs, tackling issues such as the long distance transport of horses for slaughter, live export and other animal welfare matters.

Lazar Lacatus

Lazar’s father was a blacksmith, like his grandfather before him. But Lazar would rather see his son choosing another line of work, because farriery is hard and not very productive, at least in these days.

Tight lipped and with a frown, Lazar sees the reality of working horse’s lives in his country. He is a realist who knows that without help there are tough times ahead for the people and horse population of Romania.

Tom Birch

Tom Burch has more than 25 years experience with the Metropolitan Police’s Mounted Branch and was on duty at the funerals of the Princess of Wales and the Queen Mother. He is farrier for 49 horses stabled at police HQ at Scotland Yard. A keen supporter of the ILPH, he has worked on projects in Kenya, El Salvador, Mexico, South Africa, Pakistan and Egypt.

Zaharie Hurducaci

For the last forty years, Zaharie has been doing his harnessing in a village near the town of Reghin, in Mure County. His son works by his side, hoping to follow in his father’s steps.

Zaharie is recognized as one of the best saddlers in the region, so he is rarely short of orders. Sometimes he is so busy that his wife and their two daughters – both qualified as school teachers – come and help him.

Zoltan-Csaba Ferenczi

Zoltàn is a 30 years old saddler from Târgu Mure. His wife is a nurse and they have a five year old daughter. They all live in a flat where Zoli also does his harnessing stitching during the winter, when it is too cold to work in his father’s shop.
