About Campaigns

Our aim is to change policy
and practice to protect
vulnerable horses in the UK
and Europe
Originally founded in 1927 as a campaigning organisation, the ILPH remains
committed to lobbying for long-term improved horse welfare.
As a practical organisation, we believe that the key to preventing welfare
abuses is greater protection through improved legislation and enforcement.
Campaigning to impact on policy and practice is vital to make long-term
welfare improvements.
Our Campaign strategy is based on:
- Collating factual evidence on horse welfare issues using expert opinion
and first-hand experience
- Raising awareness of horse welfare campaign issues
- Developing long-term solutions to welfare problems
- Working towards a world where the horse is used but never abused
Our campaigns cover a variety of issues which impact upon the welfare of
horses, including:
- An end to the long distance
transportation of horses to slaughter in
Europe
- Project Romania, which aims to improve the welfare of one million
working horses
- Protecting horses in the UK by lobbying for legislation and policy
revisions as well as safeguarding and improving current legislation and
enforcement (for example impacting on the Animal Welfare Act England & Wales
and the Animal Health & Welfare Scotland Act)
- Taking action on European Welfare issues

Equine Health & Welfare Strategy Committee, which is made up of
representatives across the horse industry, which launched in May 2007

the UK for slaughter until something as good if not better can be
introduced
