About Campaigns

Horse being transported
Our aim is to change policy
and practice to protect
vulnerable horses in the UK
and Europe
Originally founded in 1927 as a campaigning organisation, the ILPH remains committed to lobbying for long-term improved horse welfare.

As a practical organisation, we believe that the key to preventing welfare abuses is greater protection through improved legislation and enforcement.

Campaigning to impact on policy and practice is vital to make long-term welfare improvements.

Our Campaign strategy is based on:

  • Collating factual evidence on horse welfare issues using expert opinion and first-hand experience
  • Raising awareness of horse welfare campaign issues
  • Developing long-term solutions to welfare problems
  • Working towards a world where the horse is used but never abused

Our campaigns cover a variety of issues which impact upon the welfare of horses, including:

  • An end to the long distance transportation of horses to slaughter in Europe
  • Project Romania, which aims to improve the welfare of one million working horses
  • Protecting horses in the UK by lobbying for legislation and policy revisions as well as safeguarding and improving current legislation and enforcement (for example impacting on the Animal Welfare Act England & Wales and the Animal Health & Welfare Scotland Act)
  • Taking action on European Welfare issues click here to help.
Campaigns Recent Achievements

It is thanks to our dedicated supporters that the ILPH’s campaigns are achieving real successes, which include:

  • A reduction in the number of horses transported long distances to slaughter in Europe from 165,000 down to 100,000

  • Effecting real change to protect horses in the Animal Welfare Act (England and Wales) and Animal Health and Welfare Scotland Act

  • Influencing the EU Regulation on the Welfare of Animals during Transport 1/2005 which came into force in January 2007

  • Introducing the concept of horse welfare and equine management into Romania and by generating support for the second year of Project Romania we increased attendance on all courses. Furthermore the launch of www.ilph.ro and a dedicated Newsletter are both helping to raise the profile of the project

  • Provided our welfare expertise as part of the Equine Health & Welfare Strategy Committee, which is made up of representatives across the horse industry, which launched in May 2007

  • Achieved a commitment from the Government to maintain current legislation relating to the Live Export of horses from the UK for slaughter until something as good if not better can be introduced

Sadly there is still much more to do, and with your support we hope that we can continue to achieve further improvements for horse welfare.
