Horses and Fireworks

Fireworks can cause stress
Fireworks can cause stress

Lots of us really enjoy bonfire night but for horse owners it can be a stressful evening.

Most horses get stressed and upset by both the sound and sight of fireworks going off.

Here are some ideas that can help you and your horse have a less stressful night;

• Find out where the displays are going to be in your area, perhaps if you keep your horse at home pop a note round to all your neighbours to ask if they are going to have a bonfire party and if so when and what time.
• If the displays are going to be nearby its best to stable your horse, sometimes even shutting the top door to lessen the flashing lights.
• Put a radio on to lessen the noise of the fireworks.
• Give them plenty of hay to occupy them.
• Check during the evening to make sure they are ok. If you can it’s a good idea to stay with them, as your presence can have a calming effect.
• Sometimes it’s a good idea to put cotton wool into their ears (not all horses will accept this but it can make all the difference).

Stable Care

Have sand and water nearby in case of a fire around the stables.

If you’re at a livery stable then you’ll be used to the fire drills – make sure you know where you should go with your horse.

Field Care

In the morning check your field for stray fireworks that might have landed.

It’s not uncommon for fireworks to celebrate weddings, New Year etc so its good idea to keep an eye out for public notices of events.
